A forklift hydraulic system converts mechanical power into lifting force. The engine (on internal-combustion trucks) or a dedicated electric pump motor (on an electric hydraulic forklift) drives a hydraulic pump, which pulls fluid from the tank and pushes it under pressure into the control valve. When the operator moves a lever, the control valve directs that pressurized fluid to the lift or tilt cylinder, extending it to raise or angle the load. To lower, the valve releases fluid back toward the tank and gravity brings the load down, regulated by a flow control valve so it descends smoothly rather than dropping.
