An electric forklift uses separate motors for separate jobs. A traction motor drives the wheels to move the truck; a pump motor spins the hydraulic pump to raise, lower, and tilt the load; and some models add a dedicated steer motor for power steering. Each motor draws from the truck's battery pack — commonly 24V, 36V, or 48V — and its speed is regulated by the motor controller based on operator input.
Motors are either DC (older and many current trucks, using brushes and an armature) or AC (common on newer trucks, brushless and lower-maintenance). Because voltage, frame size, shaft, and mounting are matched to a specific model and controller, motors are not interchangeable across brands without matching specifications. Reconditioned forklift motors — inspected, with brushes and bearings replaced, armatures rewound as needed, and bench-tested — are a cost-effective alternative to buying new.
